Pro tip for those who want to see a lot in one day – bike it. I’m by no means a biker, but you get to see MILES more on 2 wheels than you do on two feet. Plus, there are plenty of places just across the Potomac River where you can park for free and ride in. Our preferred spot is near Iwo Jima.
Typically, by the time we went in early April, the Cherry Blossoms would be exploding in pink blooms. But Mother Nature had other plans, and chapped the DC area with colder-than-normal temperatures right before Bill’s visit, slowing the blossoms.
There’s a slight pinkish hue in the trees around the basin, but only the weeping cherry trees were actually in bloom, while the rest of the trees had their pink buds waiting for the right moment.
We did find some blooms though, and tried to recreate the pictures we took last year. But with limited blooms that were only cascading vertically, it was hard to get that peeking look. But these were funny nonetheless.
The blooms did give me the chance to experiment with my new camera. I spent weeks going over reviews and agonizing over whether I should go for a DSLR, a compact version, or one of those high powered point and shoot types. Given that I will be traveling to europe very soon, I decided replacing my high-end point and shoot was the way to go for now. I went with the Nikon Coolpix s9500 (4 versions newer than my old camera) annnnnd it’s a beautiful little camera. I can get some of the pretty depth of field shots that are popular in the blog world, but still shove it into my pocket quickly if needed.
All in all it was still a beautiful day in DC, and the limited blossoms were not enough to keep the hoards of tourists away. Bill nearly had his eye poked out but a few people suddenly throwing their arms out to point while we were biking along!
A quick stop for a snack made us some fowl friends!
DC in springtime simply explodes with color. And when I saw those pretty yellow forsythias I had to stop and take a few photos. They just make me smile and think of my Grandmom. 🙂
All in all it was a beautiful weekend in DC.
So what are you up to for this weekend? Will it be nice by you?
